About the county

 

The Strzelce – Drezdenko County covers the area of 1248 km2 and lies in the North-Eastern part of the Lubusz Voivodeship, over the rivers Noteć and Drawa. It is one of 12 counties in this Voivodeship. The county’s seat is in Strzelce Krajeńskie. The Strzelce – Drezdenko County covers the area of five communes, three of which are urban and rural communes (Strzelce Krajeńskie, Drezdenko, Dobiegniew) and two are rural communes (Zwierzyn, Stare Kurowo).

The county is inhabited by approx. 50 061 citizens, 52% of whom live in the village. The Strzelce – Drezdenko County borders with Choszczno Coutny from the North, with Wałcz County from the North-East, with Myślibórz County from the North-West, with Czarnków-Trzcianka County from the East, with Międzychód County from the South-East, and with Gorzów Couty from the South-West.

National road No 22 runs through the country joining two neighbouring counties: Gorzów and Wałcz. It is part of the Berlin – Tczew – Gdańsk route. There is also a regional road No 156 (Lipiany – Barlinek – Strzelce Krajeńskie – Zwierzyn – Klesno).

Railway on the route Kostrzyn – Krzyż and Szczecin – Krzyż – Poznań is very important to the region. Tourists may use the airport in Berlin, which is located 170 km from the county, as well as airports in Babimost, near Zielona Góra (140 km) and Poznań (120km).

Several bike lanes, walking trails and waterways run through the Strzelce – Drezdenko County.
In four secondary schools (ZS in Strzelce Kraj., ZSCKU im. S. Biedzryckiego in Strzelce Kraj., ZSP in Drezdenko and SOSW im. J. Korczaka in Strzelce Kraj.) there is over 1110 students every year. Furthermore, those facilities run additional extracurricular and sports classes.

Culture centres in towns and communes are responsible for cultural and educational activity in the region, which include theatre and music ensembles, concert band, dance ensembles and choirs.

Every year the economic character of the county changes – from a typically agricultural to agro-industry. Manufacturing of products for the metal industry, e.g. construction, energy production and agriculture is of high importance to the region. There is large focus on forestry – forests are an important supply area for the wood processing industry, carpenter services and paper production. Trade, construction and food processing are also well-developed here.

The county engages in activities that are mostly aimed at modernizing the road infrastructure, improving access to health care and preventive care systems, as well as attempts to acquire financial resources from EU funds.
